Paenga Tui - Preaching Place of the Tui

The final hole again has a well-protected fairway with 3 bunkers waiting to catch a wayward drive. The length of the tee shot will determine the strategy for the rest of the hole.

Kaapo - Blind Hit or Shot

One of the most demanding tee shots from the blue tees, requiring a long well positioned ball. As the name suggests the tee shot is blind generally the right side of the fairway is preferred as it opens up the green.

Tauhara - Lone Sentry

A straight forward hole although you cannot see the landing area for your tee shot, a shot down the right-hand side will generally feed back onto the fairway, however a shot pulled left leaves you struggling to find the green for 2.

Puke Wiwi - Tussock Mound

A dramatically different hole from all 3-tee locations and the last of the testing par 3's. Like most of the holes at Wairakei club selection is important, the green is large but the penalty for coming up short is heavy.

The Rogue

A well named hole and for a long time the longest hole in the country. The tee shot played down a narrow chute needs to be long and straight. Beware of the fairway bunkers left and right.

Mania Te Tonga - The South Plain

The 13th plays as one of the longest par 4's on the course. The fairway is generously wide however a tee shot down the right side provides the only direct line to the green. A difficult approach shot, the green is protected by a large pine tree short and left often requiring a shot to be played with right to left shape.

Absolutely stunning and beautiful course that proposes both challenges and enjoyment. It’s incredible scenic with very nice flora and fauna around the course. The staff were incredibly hospitable, and the course was in mint condition. The food from the bar after our round was also incredibly delicious giving us something to look forward to after our round. This is an experience I will never forget, and I hope I will be able to play this course again in my life.

A truly magnificent golf course! Set in a wildlife sanctuary the course is in impeccable shape and a joy to play. The staff are extremely friendly and upon checking in players can be provided ‘customised’ score cards with course handicap, suggested tees and slope rating. A nice touch! This was our second time playing and we chose to walk the course this time. Pace of play was perfect, and walking gave us the chance to see the entire course in all its beautiful flora and fauna! Certainly, worth every penny!!!

Is Wairakei New Zealand’s Augusta? It’s a luxurious golfing experience that leaves you feeling special and spoilt. Attention to detail is evidently important at Wairakei; the attention to detail that the team show to the guests and the attention to detail on the course, all world class.

The visual beauty of the sanctuary continuously lulls you into a false sense of security, hiding the ongoing challenge of a brilliant, tough and testing meadowland layout.

Played Wairakei this morning (my 2nd time) has to be 1 of the most best-looking courses around. Perfect condition today 1st time shooting under 1 shot 3 under 69 but does help with bugger all wind. My favourite course I’ve played.
